GST Calculation Explained: Inclusive vs Exclusive GST

Confused about GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing? Here is the exact formula and how to calculate GST in seconds.

GST (Goods and Services Tax) confuses a lot of shoppers and small business owners for one simple reason: sometimes a price already includes GST, and sometimes it needs to be added on top — and the math for these two situations is different, not just a simple percentage add or subtract.

GST-Exclusive Calculation (Adding GST)

When a price does not include GST yet, you add GST on top of the base price:

GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: A product costs ₹1,000 before GST, and GST is 18%.

  • GST Amount = 1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180
  • Final Price = 1,000 + 180 = ₹1,180

GST-Inclusive Calculation (Extracting GST)

This is where most people make mistakes. If a price of ₹1,180 already includes 18% GST, you cannot simply calculate 18% of ₹1,180 and subtract it — that would give the wrong answer. The correct formula is:

Base Price = Final Price × 100 / (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Final Price − Base Price

Example: A product is sold for ₹1,180, inclusive of 18% GST.

  • Base Price = 1,180 × 100 / 118 = ₹1,000
  • GST Amount = 1,180 − 1,000 = ₹180

Notice the base price comes out the same as the first example — which makes sense, since both examples describe the same transaction viewed from two directions. The key lesson: for inclusive GST, always divide by (100 + rate), never just calculate the percentage directly off the final price.

Common GST Rate Slabs in India

GST in India is charged at different rates depending on the category of goods or services. The most common slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with some essential items at 0%. Always confirm the applicable rate for your specific product or service category, since using the wrong slab is the most common source of GST calculation errors.

Why This Matters for Small Businesses

If you are pricing a product for sale, you need to decide whether your listed price is GST-inclusive (what the customer pays) or GST-exclusive (before tax). Getting this wrong either eats into your margin (if you forget to add GST) or overcharges your customer (if you add GST on top of an already-inclusive price). Invoicing software and calculators help avoid this exact mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST? add
CGST and SGST are charged equally on intra-state transactions (splitting the total GST rate between central and state government), while IGST is charged as a single tax on inter-state transactions. The total tax amount works out the same either way.
Can I just subtract the GST percentage directly from an inclusive price? add
No — this is the most common GST mistake. For a GST-inclusive price, you must divide by (100 + GST rate) and multiply by 100 to find the base price, not simply subtract the percentage from the final price.
Is GST calculated on MRP or the selling price? add
GST is calculated on the transaction (selling) price, which for MRP-labeled products is usually already inclusive of GST — the exact treatment can vary by product category.
